Ballard Misses Trip, Prosser In Tomorrow

Those of us who have been around the Wild for a long (long) time had a flashback this morning, as the team flew into an opposing city and then practiced. In recent years, the Wild has practiced at home and then flown into the other city at 2 p.m.

The Wild got on the ice at Verizon Center around 3 p.m. Keith Ballard, injured last night against Calgary, did not travel with the team to the nation’s capital. Mike Yeo said Ballard sustained an upper body injury, but it’s not related to an injury that caused him to miss time last month. Ballard was in a “lot of pain” so he stayed home. Carson McMillan was reassigned to AHL Iowa.

Nate Prosser will take Ballard’s spot on the blue line, as Matt Dumba was paired with Mike Rupp as an “extra” in practice today. Mike Yeo lauded Prosser’s recent games, and said he will be a big part of a penalty kill effort against the Caps’ high-powered power play, while emphasizing it had nothing to do with the pending “10-game” mark for Dumba. The other key on the penalty kill, of course, is staying out of the box.

When the Wild arrived at Dulles today, it passed the Washington Redskins’ bus. The Redskins, of course, were en route to MSP to face the Vikings on Thursday. The Wild game begins at 6 p.m. (ct) on FOX Sports North, while the radio broadcast will be on KOOL 108. The Caps — like the Wild — have won three in a row, including a 6-2 victory over the Isles last night in some guy named Alexander Ovechkin’s return to the lineup.

If you’re in the hockey mood tonight (and who isn’t), Charlie Coyle will be a guest on Wild Weekly on KFAN-FM (100.3) at 8 p.m.
