Checking In: Worlds, Memorial Cup
While we’ve had a good week to recover from the jarring end of Minnesota’s season that was Patrick Kane’s overtime goal in Game 6 of the Second Round — clearly not still mulling over that one at all — there are a few members of the Wild’s organization still in action.

Wild forward Erik Haula is skating with Team Finland at the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship Tournament, while prospect Zack Mitchell is playing for the Guelph Storm in the 2014 Memorial Cup.

First, let’s check in with Haula.

The speedy forward who made a mark in his first NHL postseason — posting four goals (tied for first on the Wild) and three assists for seven points — left for Belarus, this year’s host of the IIHF tournament, the day after the Wild’s Game 6 loss.

With the tournament already underway, Haula missed the first four games of preliminary action but notched an assist in the final three games of the opening round. Finland posted a 3-1-0-3 record and finished fourth in Group B with 11 points. Russia took first, Team USA second, and Belarus third.

Finland will face off with Group A winner, Canada, in the quarterfinals Thursday, May 22.

Now, let’s check in with Mitchell.

Mitchell, who the Wild inked to an entry-level deal on March 4, ranked fifth on the Storm with 83 points in the regular season through 67 games played. Through 20 games in the playoffs, he was second on the team in points with 30 and second in goals with 12. His effort helped lead Guelph clinching a spot in the Memorial Cup Tournament.

Through two wins in this year’s Tournament, hosted in London, Ontario, Mitchell has tallied a goal and two assists for three points. Guelph will play a final game tonight against London, but with a 2-0 record in round robin play it has already clinched a spot in the final Sunday at 3 p.m. State of Hockey time.
