Worlds, Memorial Cup Update
A few members of the Wild’s organization are still in action this weekend as forward Erik Haula skates with Team Finland in the International Ice Hockey Federation World Tournament in Minsk, Belarus. Prospect Zack Mitchell is also still on the ice, battling for a Memorial Cup with the Guelph Storm at this year’s tournament in London, Ontario.
Haula - Team Finland
Yesterday marked the start of the tournament’s Championship Round. Finland drew no. 1 seeded Canada in the quarterfinals and used a come-from-behind effort to top Team Canada, 3-2. Haula picked up two PIMs in the game.
The Finns will face the Czech Republic, who edged Team USA, 4-3, in the quarters, in the semifinals Saturday. The winner will move onto the Finals against the winner of Russia and Sweden, while the loser will fight for bronze. Both of those games will take place Sunday.
Mitchell - Guelph Storm
Wednesday night, the Storm rounded out preliminary play of the Memorial Cup Tournament with a resounding 7-2 win against the London Knights for a perfect 3-0 record in round robin play.
Mitchell finished opening play with a goal and two assists for three points through three games played. He also registered a plus-one rating and picked up five PIMs.
Guelph already punched its ticket to the championship game Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. State of Hockey time. It will play the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Val d’Or Foreurs.
