League Chatty As Draft Day Arrives

Happy Draft Day from Philadelphia (well, technically, the NHL Entry Draft is spread over two days, with the first round tonight, but you know what we mean).

Today, the Minnesota Wild currently holds the 18th pick overall. The Lighthouse says ‘currently’ because we spoke with Assistant General Manager Brent Flahr this morning, and he said that moving down is in play depending on which players are available in the spot.

Minnesota is without a second-round pick this year (sent to Buffalo in part of the deal that brought Matt Moulson and Cody McCormick to Minnesota on the Trade Deadline Day), something Flahr brought up in talking about possibly shifting down. He also said that there’s been a ton of chatter around the League, more so than in years past, so we could see some fireworks today regarding player movement. However, it likely won’t start until the Draft is underway, so tune in at 6 p.m. State of Hockey Time.

This year’s Minnesota Wild/Wells Fargo Road Tour will conclude at Xcel Energy Center with the annual Summer Bash, which will double as a Draft Party. So, come on down to Saint Paul and see if the Wild makes any moves or stands pat at 18. Of course, Wild.com/draft is your headquarters for all Draft Day related content.

Finally, an interesting wrinkle, and something to watch out for tonight, is the number of prospects with NHL bloodlines. According to a story in The Hockey News, there are 22 prospects with family ties to former NHLers. Central Scouting’s third-ranked North American prospect, Sam Reinhart’s father, Paul, played 11 seasons, while his brothers Max (third round) and Griffin (first round) were drafted. A bit further down the list, Tyler Nanne (ranked 118), is the grandson of State of Hockey legend Lou Nanne. So, if you’re watching the next few days and hear a familiar name, there’s probably a reason.
