The awards and accolades continue to pile up for Minnesota Wild prospect Mario Lucia. The University of Notre Dame freshman was named to the 2013 CCHA All-Rookie Team today.
The 19-year-old from Plymouth, Minn., finished third among CCHA rookies in conference scoring, tying Riley Barber of Miami University for most goals by a freshman with 12. His 22 points (12-10=22) is good for fifth on Notre Dame in scoring. The Minnesota Wild draft pick was named CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week twice (Dec. 2 and 9), Postgame Offensive Player of the Week once (March 4) and earned the Gongshow Rookie of the Month honor in December. The forward played in 27 games after missing nine with a broken leg, suffered during preseason.
Earlier this season, Lucia also helped the USA National Junior Team win the Gold Medal at the IIHF World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia.
Lucia and the Irish return to CCHA playoff action this weekend when Notre Dame (21-12-3) plays host to the Bowling Green Falcons (15-19-5) in a best-of-three quarterfinal series, March 15-17.
The all-rookie team was voted on by the conference’s head coaches and the team will be honored at the 2013 CCHA Awards on Friday, March 22, at the Fox Theatre in Detroit. The 2013 CCHA Championship is March 23-24 at Joe Louis Arena.
