After his oustanding week of play, Wild goalie, Niklas Backstrom, has been named the NHL's Number Two Star of the Week ending March 24.
During the week Backstrom went 3-0-0 stopping 104-of-107 shots faced for a 1.00 goals against average, a .972 save percentage and one shutout in three starts last week. Backstrom made 35 saves in a 3-1 win at Vancouver (3/18), made a season-high 36 saves in a 4-2 win and Detroit (3/20) and stopped all 33 shots in a 2-0 win vs. San Jose to record his first shutout of the season. He has started the last 10 games for Minnesota.
Backstrom has been an ironman between the posts for the Wild this season. He’s started 14 of the Wild’s last 15 games and moved to 13-3-1 with a 1.98 GAA and a .929 SV% in his last 17 games. In the Wild’s five-game winning streak, Backstrom sports a 2.00 GAA and a .942 SV%. This is Backstrom’s longest winning streak in a single season since the final five games of the 2007-08 season (3/21-4/3/08). His longest career win streak in a single season is seven (3/8-3/22/07).
Backstrom entered play Sunday evening tied for the NHL lead with 16 wins. This is Backstrom's second honor this season. He was named the NHL's Number Three Star of the Week on March 4, while this is the fifth time he has neen named an NHL Star of the Week.
The NHL's Number One Star of the Week was Capitals winger, Alexander Ovechkin, who recorded five goals and eight points (5-3=8) in four games last week, while the Number Three Star of the Week was Toronto center, Nazem Kadri. Kadri had seven points (3-4=7) in three games last week.
