GAMEDAY: Wild vs. Columbus

Wednesday, 09.18.2013 / 2:36 PM

After five days of practice, off-ice workouts and an intra-squad scrimmage, the Minnesota Wild finally gets to faceoff against an opponent wearing colors other than Iron Range Red and Forrest Green.

The Minnesota Wild opens its six-game preseason schedule at home against the split-squad Columbus Blue Jackets (the team hosts the Buffalo Sabres tonight, as well).

Tonight's game can be heard on KFAN 100.3 FM, as well as online.

Tonight’s Wild Lineup

The Wild brass will take a look at some of the youngsters trying to make the Opening Night roster along with a few veterans acquired in the offseason:

Stephane VeilleuxKyle BrodziakTorrey Mitchell
Jason ZuckerMikael GranlundJustin Fontaine
Matt CookeCharlie CoyleNino Niederreiter
Jake Dowell
– David Steckel – Carson McMillan

Keith BallardMathew Dumba
Marco Scandella
Nate Prosser
Brian Connelly
Jonathon Blum

Goaltender Niklas Backstrom will get the start in net, with Darcy Kuemper backing up the veteran.

What to Watch

For those who think the preseason has no significant importance, ask any of the players trying to make the Wild lineup when the team opens its regular season on Oct. 3 against the Los Angeles Kings and they will tell you exactly how important tonight’s game is. Training camp will determine where many young players will player this season; either in Minnesota or with the team’s American Hockey League affiliate the Iowa Wild. Expect the club’s youngster to try to make plays and impress the coaching staff and front office.

Tonight’s Blue Jackets Roster

Jack Skille - Ryan Craig - Cam Atkinson
Blake Comeau - Ryan Johansen - Cody Bass
Michael Chaput - Sean Collins - Kerby Rychel
Mark Letestu - Jake Hansen – Trent Vogelhuber

James Wisniewski - Ryan Murray
Ilari Melart - Will Weber
Cody Goloubef - Blake Parlett

Columbus is bringing Jeremy Smith and Oscar Dansk in goal.

Up Next

The Wild will travel to Winnipeg on Thursday for the start of a home-and-home series (Minnesota will host the Jets on Saturday) with its new Central Division foes.
