GAMEDAY: Wild at Chicago

Saturday, 10.26.2013 / 12:10 PM

Minnesota Wild (5-3-3: 13 points, T-8th in Western Conference, T-3rd in Central Division) vs Chicago Blackhawks (6-1-3: 15 points, 5th in Western Conference, 2nd in Central Division)
The Wild looks for its third straight win tonight in Chicago, a place Minnesota hasn’t visited since a Game 5 loss in last season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs. This begins a home-and-home, with the Wild hosting Chicago on Monday. Minnesota will wear its new road whites not only tonight, but Monday as well.

The story of the game is goaltending - as Niklas Backstrom makes his first start since Oct. 10. He missed time with a lower body injury, but an injury to Josh Harding on Thursday opened the door for Backstrom, who made seven saves in 20 relief minutes.

Keep an eye on the second period tonight, as it features two of the best middle stanza teams in the league Minnesota outscores its opponents 8-5 in the second but outshoots them 124-74. Chicago has a whopping 15-6 advantage in the second, outshooting them 123-86. But opponents have been wearing out the ‘Hawks in the third, with a 12-5 edge.

Jason Pominville will skate in his 600th NHL game tonight. Dany Heatley also approaches a milestone; he’s playing in his 799th NHL game tonight.

With the Wild on the road, it continues to look for fan engagement with the Red Baron Roadie. The contest is how fans can win great items like autographed merchandise, and maybe even a spot on the 2014-15 Fan Road Trip. Visit the contest rules page for more info on how to enter.
Meet the Hawks If You're Going
Chicago has points in seven straight games (5-0-2), although it hasn’t been in dominating fashion. Four of the Hawks’ last five games have gone into overtime or a shootout, including a 6-5 loss in Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

The Hawks, often one of the top PP units in the league, are 20th in the NHL at home (16.0%) but it would behoove the Wild not to tempt fate and go to the box much. Chicago’s PK is an NHL-worst 71.0%.
Are you following @mnwild on twitter? If not, you should be. One lucky Wild fan at United Center tonight will win a Wild prize courtesy of @mnwild. Stay tuned later today for how you can win.

The Wild will wear its WHITE sweaters tonight.
Who's Hot Gameday Media
The Wild power play has scored a goal in eight of 10 games, including a 2-for-5 performance against the Hurricanes two nights ago. Minnesota ranks fifth in the NHL in power play percentage (25.7%). Zach Parise leads the Wild with three PPG.

Fans can guess who's going to be hot with the Wild's HotBox Fantasy Challenge presented by the Pioneer Press for a chance to win great prizes.

View From The Press Box
We’ve got a long season here, so we’ve got to look at the big picture, whether it’s Hards, Charlie or Brodin.

- Yeo referring to the Wild’s current injury situation and not rushing anyone back into the lineup.

Keith Ballard will miss another game, as a preventative measure. Jonas Brodin is out indefinitely with a cheek bone facture from taking a puck to the face on Tuesday.
