Nov. 12, 2008

1 p.m. CST

The big news coming out of today’s practice was that Brent Burns appears poised to not only return to the lineup tomorrow, but at forward. Burns skated on a line with Eric Belanger and Andrew Brunette. Mikko Koivu centered Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Owen Nolan. Jacques Lemaire said that with his team needing some offense, and all six defensemen playing well, it gives him the option of moving Burns up front. He also said he liked the chemistry that Koivu and Bouchard have had in practice.

It was “signing day” downstairs, as the marketing department had dozens of sticks, jerseys, hats, etc., that they use throughout the season. They usually do a couple of these signing days a year. And the good news for players (and the PR staff) is that food is brought in for the event. So that’s two free lunches in two days for those of you following at home.

Phoenix plays tonight in Columbus and then flies here after the game, so Robert, our intern, is busy getting together packets of info to drop off at their hotel.

I’ve received some e-mails that I will include tomorrow, but, for now, I’m off to the Channel 5 studios for Twin Cities Live. Bacon wrapped pork tenderloin … pork on pork … more people should try that.

10 a.m. CST

I start today’s blog off with a sad announcement. Join the entire State of Hockey in mourning the loss of Lori Luoma, a season ticketholder who died (way too early, I may add) yesterday after suffering a brain hemorrhage while in Phoenix earlier this month to watch the Wild play. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lori’s family and her many friends.

I’ll be back after practice with a quick update before heading over to Channel 5 as Nick Schultz and his wife, Jessica, will make bacon wrapped pork tenderloin today on Twin Cities Live. You can watch from 3-4 p.m.! We’re also working with Twin Cities Live on a story on the players’ wives playing bingo with children at a hospital once a month. We’re hoping to shoot that story in December. Oh, and Niklas Backstrom will be a guest on XM 204’s Mike Ross Show today at 2:45 p.m. (central time).

Some other Wild news …

Wild fans, make sure you set your VCRs (I haven’t yet entered the TiVo world) Thursday at 6:30 p.m. on the NHL Network for “Voices: Bob Kurtz.” NHL Network continues its series on NHL broadcasters. They followed Bob around for an entire game day in October. It should be a great half hour.

Keith Carney officially retired over the weekend, according to the Pawtucket Times (http://www.pawtuckettimes.com/content/view/56073/33/). Carney, one of the best guys you’ll ever meet in hockey – make that anywhere, will get to spend more time with his wife and four kids (including triplets). He signed a tryout during training camp with the Blackhawks, but they didn’t have a spot for him. Carney will be remembered by Wild fans for his tutelage of young defensemen including Brent Burns, for his overtime game winner against Colorado in Game 2 in 2008, becoming the oldest player ever to score an overtime playoff goal, and his constant humor and enthusiasm.

Time for some R.S.S. Feed e-mails.

Q: Hey Ryan,

I read your blog on a daily basis. I'm from Montreal, Canada. I was wondering what's the routine of coach Jacques Lemaire on game day when playing a home game.

Thank you.

Sincerely yours,
Daniel from Montreal

A: Thanks for the note from up north, Daniel. All the coaches’ pre-game routines usually mirror the players’, both at home on the road. A nice lunch after the morning skate, and a nap in the afternoon. The coaches are usually back at the rink at least an hour before the players are, however, so their nap isn’t quite as long.

Q: I just want to thank you for good work. This is the only way we have news about Ben (Pouliot) up here. It's good to know what going on in practice and off ice down there.
Continue your good work and thank again.

Alain from Alfred, Ont.
P/S sorry for my English writing

A: Awesome e-mail, Alain. And excellent English, too. Thanks for reading.

Q: I really enjoy reading your postings.  I have a quick question for you, when will Kurtis be back playing?

Shawn from Osceola, Wisc.

A: Hi, Shawn. Thanks for the note and for asking about Kurtis Foster. There has been no definite timetable set for his return to the ice in a Wild sweater. He is skating several times a week right now, plus his rigorous off-the-ice training regiment.
