The “Ultimate SAAAVE” Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Awareness Campaign
![]() |
| Jim Craig, the goaltender from the United States "Miracle On Ice" team, will be at the Wild game on September 18 in support of "Ultimate Saaave." |
Each year approximately 200,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with AAA, the swelling or ballooning of the abdominal aorta. When AAA is not treated, it can lead to rupture, which is a leading cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, AAA is treatable if caught early.
Jim Craig, the gold-medal winning goalie from the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" USA Olympic Hockey Team will be at the game to help raise awareness of AAA, a disease that took the life of his father.
Craig has teamed up with W.L. Gore & Associates and the Society of Vascular Surgery to encourage hockey fans across the country to make the “Ultimate SAAAVE” by becoming aware of AAA and a new, one-time ultrasound screening benefit that only recently became covered by Medicare for qualified seniors due to landmark legislation known as the SAAAVE Act (Screening Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Very Efficiently). This benefit covers men ages 65 to 75 who have a history of smoking, and men and women age 65 to 75 who have a family history of AAA.
