Training Camp Opens Friday

Training Camp Opens Friday
Branko Radivojevic will be taking part in his second Wild training camp beginning tomorrow.
The majority, if not all, of the players that will take the Xcel Energy Center ice tomorrow have been skating over the past month, whether it be at a Prospects Camp, or at open ice somewhere in the Twin Cities. But none of them have had Jacques Lemaire barking instructions in his familiar accent, and that soothing sound will mark Friday's opening of the Wild's 2007 Training Camp presented by Wells Fargo.

Wild.com will be providing constant coverage of the camp.

In his media press conference to open camp on Thursday, Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough predicted this year to have the "most competitive" camp in the history of the club. That likely means that several Wild prospects will have the chance to push for a roster spot.

"The competition will be great," agreed Head Coach Jacques Lemaire. "What I've heard from scouting personnel is that there are a few guys that we'll have to make tough decisions on. Maybe they'll take the spot of a guy that played here last year. That's exciting when you hear that. You hate to see that maybe one of your guys that gave a lot last year has to go. But if he has to go, it means the one you're getting is better."

The Wild players won't have many days of scrimmaging before taking part in game action. Minnesota hosts Detroit on Tuesday after just four days of camp.

"It's kind of short, as usual. We feel that scrimmages is the best thing to do because there are a lot of guys and it's the quickest way that they'll get in shape."

Among the story lines that Wild.com will be closely following during camp will be the battle between veterans and youngsters for a roster spot, the progress of former Gopher Tyler Hirsh, who is trying out, and the returns of two former Wild draft picks in defenseman A.J. Thelen and goaltender Barry Brust.
