Wild About Reading Winners Announced
May 18, 2005

SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The National Hockey League's (NHL) Minnesota Wild today announced the winners of the 2005 "Wild About Reading" Program.  The top readers in each grade category were Dustin Andree (Grade 1-2) of South Elementary School in St. Peter, Minn., Jenny L. (Grade 3-4) of Sunset Hill Elementary School in Plymouth, Minn. and Sammie Hanson (Grade 5-6) of Longfellow Choice School in Rochester, Minn.  They will each receive a Minnesota Wild jersey.

The top three classrooms with the highest reading totals were from Rum River Elementary School in Rum River, Minn. (Grade 1-2), Glendale Elementary School in Savage, Minn. (Grade 3-4) and Sun Path Elementary School in Shakopee, Minn. (Grade 5-6).  These classes will win either a classroom visit by a Wild representative or an Xcel Energy Center tour.

The "Wild About Reading" Program was launched to help increase student literacy by providing incentives to read outside the classroom.  More than 5,500 students from 100 schools throughout the state of Minnesota participated in this year's program, which ran from January 1 through April 1, 2005.  Each teacher who participated in the program chose a four-week period for their classroom to keep track of its reading outside of school.  Students' reading minutes had to come from reading for fun, not from homework or other programs.  All students received a reading scorecard and a "Wild About Reading" bookmark by registering for the program to keep track of the number of minutes they read.

All students who completed the program by reading 500 minutes (Grades 1-2) or 700 minutes (Grades 3-6) received a certificate of completion and a Wild About Reading pencil.  The top 200 readers overall based on minutes read in each grade category (Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6) received a Wild school bag.
