Rolston Named Team Captain For February

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough and Head Coach Jacques Lemaire announced tonight that forward Brian Rolston will serve as team captain for the month of February while defenseman Willie Mitchell and center Wes Walz will serve as alternate captains.  Rolston becomes the first forward to be named captain for the Wild this season as defensemen Alex Henry (October), Filip Kuba (November) and Mitchell (December and January) have all worn the “C” previously.

The Wild will continue to rotate the captaincy on a monthly basis this season, based on the player who has shown the greatest leadership qualities.  Mitchell and Walz are also eligible to be named a monthly captain, in which case a new alternate captain would be named for the month.

Rolston, 32 (2/21/73), has scored 56 points (23-33=56) skating in all 53 games this season with the Wild.  He is the team leader in goals (23), assists (33), points (56) and ranks tied for first with a +14 rating.  Rolston extended his point streak to a season-high eight games (5-7=12) with a first period goal Tuesday night in Minnesota’s 3-2 loss at Colorado.  He would tie his career-high for longest point streak (nine games) with a point tonight at San Jose and is two games shy of tying Andrew Brunette’s team-record of ten consecutive games with a point.

The Flint, Michigan-native will play in his third Olympic Winter Games February 15-26 in Torino, Italy for the 2006 U.S. Men’s Olympic Ice Hockey team.  He has collected 213 goals and 275 assists in 789 career NHL games during 11 seasons with New Jersey, Colorado, Boston and Minnesota.  The Wild signed Rolston as a free agent on July 8, 2004.
