Marian Gaborik scored twice including the game-winner in Slovakia’s 5-3 upset win over Team Russia on Wednesday.

Defenseman Daniel Tjarnqvist

scored the first goal of the men’s tournament, and then added another, as he helped Team Sweden to a 7-2 rout of Kazakhstan. Tjarnqvist scored on both of the shots that he took, and he finished with a team-high plus-3 rating. Sweden never trailed, building a 3-0 lead after the first, and scoring four more goals in the second period.

This is Tjarnqvist’s first Olympic Games. His second game will be a bit tougher tomorrow, when Sweden takes on Team Russia.

Center Mikko Koivu made his Olympic debut with Team Finland, which shut out Switzerland, 5-0. Koivu did not register a point, but recorded one shot on goal. Teemu Selanne and Olli Jokinen each scored twice for the Finns, who should have a walk in the park tomorrow, facing tournament host, Italy.

Defenseman Filip Kuba also made his Olympic debut on Wednesday with the Czech Republic, winners of the 1998 gold medal. Kuba registered two shots on goal and an even rating in the Czech Republic’s 4-1 win over Olaf Kolzig, and Team Germany. Tomas Kaberle scored twice for the Czechs, who take on Team Switzerland tomorrow.

Right wing Marian Gaborik led Team Slovakia to a 5-3 upset win over Team Russia by scoring two third period goals to break a 3-3 tie. Gaborik was also a plus-2, and he recorded five shots on goal. Tomorrow, Team Slovakia will take on Team Latvia.

Left wing Brian Rolston was held without a point in Team USA’s 3-3 tie with Team Latvia. Rolston nearly tallied a shorthanded game-winner in the third period with a blast from the left side that skittered through goaltender Arturs Irbe and missed wide by inches. Rolston finished the night with two shots on goal and an even rating.

Brian Gionta, Craig Conroy and Golden Valley native, Jordan Leopold scored for the United States. Bret Hedican of St. Paul notched an assist on Leopold’s game-tying goal. Rolston and Team USA will look for a win tomorrow against Kazakhstan, scheduled for 2:00 PM central standard time.
