Wild Acquires Skoula And Belle For Mitchell

Minnesota Wild President and General Manager Doug Risebrough today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has acquired defensemen Martin Skoula (pronounced Skool-uh) and Shawn Belle from the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Willie Mitchell and the Wild’s second round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Skoula, 26 (10/28/79), recorded 15 points (4-11=15) including three power-play goals and 36 penalty minutes in 61 games with Dallas this season while averaging 18:40 of ice-time per game.  The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defenseman has skated in 465 career NHL games and has recorded 137 points (33-104=137) and 236 penalty minutes during seven seasons with Colorado, Anaheim and Dallas.  Skoula was originally selected by the Avalanche in the first round (17th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft and has skated in 68 career playoff games, all with Colorado, notching 14 points (1-13=14).  He was a member of Colorado’s 2001 Stanley Cup championship team, appearing in all 23 playoff contests and scoring five points (1-4=5).  The Litomerice, Czech Republic-native also represented his country at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Belle, 21 (1/3/85), notched three points (1-2=3) and 63 penalty minutes in 45 games with the Iowa Stars of the American Hockey League (AHL).  The 6-foot-1, 220-pound defenseman was originally selected by St. Louis in the first round (30th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.  The Edmonton, Alberta-native tallied 45 points (13-32=45) and 76 penalty minutes in 62 games with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last year.  Belle was a member of Canada’s 2005 World Junior Championship gold medal team as he recorded an assist and was a +9 in six games.  He will be assigned to the Houston Aeros (AHL), the club’s primary development affiliate.

Mitchell, 28 (4/23/77), collected eight points (2-6=8) and 87 penalty minutes in 64 games with the Wild this season.  The 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman has recorded 59 points (9-50=59) and 362 penalty minutes in 306 career NHL games during six seasons with New Jersey and Minnesota.  He appeared in 290 games with the Wild totaling 57 points (9-48=57) and 333 penalty minutes after being acquired in a trade with New Jersey on March 4, 2001.
