Dutch Schnell: Vote For Me...Please!

altDutch Schnell, goalie-racer here, and as you can tell by observing the photo to the left, I’m bored.

I’m not a big fan of the whole “Wild having two consecutive days off” thing. It’s kind of weak, wouldn’t you agree? Personally, I’m of the opinion that 82 games in 82 days should not be out of the question. Now, I’m not saying we don’t give the guys a day off here and there around the holidays. Of course they deserve some time to be with their families and such. But we’d just make up those days with double and triple-headers on Saturdays.

Stay with me here. There would be 20-minute intermissions between games, and watching goalie-races, obviously, would pass that time. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t be opposed to moving in the direction of baseball and adding 80 more games for a 162 game season.

We’ll see what the board of Governors decides this summer, but for tonight, I’ll deal with a second consecutive Wild “off” day and get my hockey fix by watching the mighty Crusaders of Holy Cross take on the lowly University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus Gophers in NCAA Tournament action.

Speaking of the Golden Rodents, I bet you’re wondering how I feel about sharing the Xcel Energy Center rink with a former Gopher that is now playing on my favorite NHL team, the Minnesota Wild.

At first, I was against it. I lobbied to have the Wild bring former Bulldog defenseman Ryan Coole out of

retirement. Not only did he play for UMD, but also he has a great hockey name, so we’d be catching two butterflies with one net (and then letting them go free of course).

Wild president/general manager Doug Risebrough eschewed my uneducated opinion and opted to go with Apple Valley-native Erik Westrum, who had scored 92 points in 68 games so far this season in Houston. Not bad. I guess it’s worth seeing what he can do.

Well, I’m a bit ashamed to say this, but I’m now officially on the Westy bandwagon. I had the pleasure of meeting him this week, and you can hardly even tell that he used to be a Gopher. He’s very polite and cordial. He speaks wonderful English, which caught me a little off guard. Above all, he didn’t treat me any differently, although he knew full well about my goalie-racing past and present.

I don’t just like Westy the guy. I like Westy the player. While he has the scoring punch, he has a bit of a nasty side as evidenced by his 132 penalty minutes in Houston. He hasn’t picked up a minor yet, but I have a feeling he might be saving a hook, trip or a face wash combined with some witty putdowns for our friends in Vancouver next week.

That’s something that can make us all smile and dance around happily by ourselves in front of a mirror.

Only 33%. Come on people! Help a goalie-racer out here!
And speaking of happy stuff, let’s talk briefly about the new poll on my favorite website, Wild.com. In said poll, fans are asked to vote for their favorite new feature on the Wild website. One of the options is “Dutch Schnell.” That’s me!

Now, far be it from me to grovel and beg the loyal readers of this venerable website, but if you have the means, pleeeeeeze click on that little circle next to my name!

Right now, the early returns have me in a dead heat with “The new design,” but I suspect that might be due to the future Dutchess of Schnell being at the local library and voting on every computer she can find.

Don’t let “The new design” take this one. What has the “new design” done for you lately? Does it have feelings? Does it bleed? Is it there to give you a hug after a long day? No, it isn’t.

But anytime you feel like you need a shoulder to cry on, I will be there (in spirit). All you have to do is email me here, and promise not to tell the future Dutchess of Schnell, who I’ll be spending the rest of this “off” day with.

Until next week my favorite people in the whole wide world who shouldn’t forget to vote for me on the homepage of wild.com…I love you!

I am Dutch Schnell, and I…am a goalie racer.
