Wild About Reading Winners Announced

The National Hockey League’s (NHL) Minnesota Wild announced today the winners of the 2006 “Wild About Reading” Program.  The top readers in each grade category were Nathan Uk (Grades 1-2) of Glendale Elementary School in Savage, Minn., Jennifer Siv (Grades 3-4) of Red Oak Elementary School in Shakopee, Minn., and Jenny Lai (Grades 5-6) of Sunset Elementary School in Plymouth, Minn.  They will each receive a Minnesota Wild jersey.

The top classroom with the highest reading total was Mr. Grinde’s sixth grade class from Spring Grove Public Schools in Spring Grove, Minn.  This class will win either a classroom visit by a Wild representative or an Xcel Energy Center tour.

The “Wild About Reading” Program was launched in 2004 to help increase student literacy by providing incentives to read outside the classroom.  More than 6,000 students from 56 schools throughout the state of Minnesota participated in this year’s program, which ran from February 1 through April 1, 2006.  Each teacher who participated in the program choose a four-week period for their classroom to keep track of its reading outside of school.  Students’ reading minutes had to come from reading for fun, not from homework or other school programs.  All students received a reading scorecard and a “Wild About Reading” bookmark by registering for the program to keep track of the number of minutes they read.

All students who completed the program by reading 500 minutes (Grades 1-2), or 700 minutes (Grades 3-6) received a certificate of completion and a “Wild About Reading” pencil.  The top 200 readers overall based on minutes read in each grade category (Grades 1-2, Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6) received a Minnesota Wild magnet set.

For more information on participating in the “Wild About Reading” Program next year please contact the Minnesota Wild’s Joelle Nelson at (651) 602-5730.
