Brent Burns’ Road Tour Diary - Day One

Burns struggled with his shooting accuracy, blaming his misfortune on a street hockey stick.
Hello State of Hockey!

It was an early day today, the first day of the Wells Fargo Wild Road Tour. I started with a cheese omelet at my house at 6:30 AM. After that, it was shower time, and then I was off to the Wild front offices in Saint Paul, where I arrived at 7:30 A.M. I was greeted by Wild staffer/NHL great, Brad Bombardir. My traveling partner, Stephane Veilleux, was five minutes late, like always, and we got on the road at 8:05 AM.

We proceeded to Rochester to make what they told me is a “super-stop.” We were about half way when Steph and I decided we were hungry again. We stopped at a local establishment for 10 orders of hash browns, pancakes and an egg sandwich.

After our second breakfast, it was back on the road and we saw when we pulled up to the event that a lot of fans showed up to see us in Rochester. We answered questions, signed autographs and played games. To my dismay, I lost the sharp-shooting game we played. I was using a street hockey stick and only hit one target. Stephane, using a wooden stick, hit two. It was embarrassing.

From there we went to a local rink for a quick skate with some area children, which was fun. Some kids and I decided to race across the rink. I won by a narrow margin, doing the “Minnesota slide” from the blue line to the end boards.

After skating, we went to a local children’s hospital where we visited some kids who aren’t feeling so well. We met some really great people there, especially some kids that are battling hard. We wish them the best.

We rounded out our day with a VIP event to thank some sponsors. Folks from Wells Fargo and Charter Communications were there. A lot of families were there, and someone had handed out mini-sticks and soft pucks. Steph and I joined about a dozen kids for an impromptu game of floor hockey right before we signed autographs. That was a lot of fun.

It’s been a long day and I’m beat. They tell me there’s plenty more to come tomorrow, so I’m going to get some rest tonight. Talk to you all later.

- Brent Burns
