Wild Signs Three Rookie Free Agents

The names Albers, Hamilton and Madill aren’t going to grab the attention of the hockey world as much as names like Parrish, Carney and Johnsson. While the latter three will be fixtures in the Wild lineup come October 5 and can help immediately, the former three will most likely be looking for apartments in Houston, Texas, with hopes of helping the organization in the future.

On Wednesday, the Wild announced the signings of rookie free agent defensemen Paul Albers and Mike Madill, and left wing Ryan Hamilton. The signings bolster the amount of youth in the organization and will add depth to the Houston Aeros, the Wild’s primary developmental affiliate.

Before being dismissed as AHL lifers, one should check the recent successes of the three potential diamonds in the rough. Albers is coming off his best season with the Western Hockey League champion Vancouver Giants. He scored a whopping 62 points (17-45=62) and was named to the WHL First All-Star Team and was a nominee for the League’s top defenseman.

Hamilton led the Ontario Hockey League’s Barrie Colts in goals with 46 in 63 games. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound left wing added 17 points (8-9=17) in 14 OHL playoff games before signing an Amateur Tryout Contract with the Houston Aeros on May 2. He appeared in one Aeros playoff game.

Ryan Hamilton scored 46 goals last season with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
Madill captained the St. Lawrence Saints of the ECAC in his senior season, which was his best offensively. He tallied 27 points, including 22 assists, which was good enough for second on the team, which finished with a 21-17-2 overall record. He was named the ECAC’s best defensive defenseman and was First Team Defense. He set school records in games played (154) and consecutive games played (153).

All three will be present when the Wild’s much-anticipated training camp opens on September 15.
