Wild Signs In-State Product
Following the trade for Pavol Demitra, the free agent signings of Mark Parrish, Keith Carney, Kim Johansson, and the re-signings of players like Marian Gaborik, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Brent Burns, the clamoring for the Wild to sign some big-name free agents and re-up Marian Gaborik came to a screeching halt. The Minnesota Wild’s general email inbox was suddenly only being filled up by donation and ticket requests.

One email did trickle in, asking the Wild to sign more Minnesotans and college players.

Wild management likely did not consider the email in moving forward with finalizing the roster, but the club did add one player on Wednesday that covers both requests.

Center Wyatt Smith, the Thief River Falls-native that starred in high school for Warroad before a succesful career with the Minnesota Gophers, has agreed to a one-year contract with his home state Minnesota Wild. Smith has seen action with three NHL teams, but his 42 appearances a year ago with the New York Islanders tied a career high.

At 5-foot-11, 198 pounds, Smith has struggled to achieve a full season in the NHL, and with a Wild roster that appears solidified with virtual locks in all but one forward position, the going could be tough with his hometown team. The common thinking has been that a youngster such as Benoit Pouliot, Roman Voloshenko or Danny Irmen could slide into that position.

One thing those guys don’t have that Smith does is NHL experience. He’s played 125 games since arriving in the League with Phoenix in the 1999-2000 season. His most productive offensive output came in 2000-2001 with the Coyotes, when he scored three goals and added seven assists. Last year, he tallied eight assists with the Islanders.
