Ward Assigned To Houston
Joel Ward’s Cinderella run through Minnesota Wild training camp is over...for now. After earning the respect and recognition of the team’s coaching staff for his hard work, Ward became the last healthy position player cut from the roster prior to Opening Night on Thursday.
Ward, who started camp as a tryout player, earned a contract from the organization on Tuesday after impressing in practice and three preseason games. At one point, head coach Jacques Lemaire warned that a regular may lose his roster position to Ward is he’s not careful. While that won’t happen now, Ward has likely earned himself an early call up should one be made to Houston after the season begins.
The Wild still has three goaltenders on the roster, and a move will likely be made depending on the health of Josh Harding. Two players - James Sheppard and Clayton Stoner - are nursing injuries and will be assigned prior to October 5.
