Wild Lands 9th Overall Pick

The Minnesota Wild had a 2.7% chance to win tonight's NHL Draft Lottery and move up to the fifth overall pick. The ping pong ball miracle didn't happen, and the Wild will pick right where the odds put them, ninth overall. This will be the second time in franchise history that Minnesota has held the ninth overall pick. The last time came in 2006, when the club selected James Sheppard.

The Edmonton Oilers won the first overall selection and the right to choose between Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin.

The Central Scouting Service ranks former Duluth East Greyhound, current USNTP program and future University of North Dakota defenseman Derek Forbort ninth. However, that only accounts for North American players and does not take into account European prospects playing overseas. Forbort is the second-ranked American behind defenseman Cam Fowler, and he's the top-ranked Minnesotan. Other Minnesotans in the top 30 include Mr. Hockey Nick Bjugstad of Blaine (14), Former Centennial Cougar and current Minnesota State Mankato Maverick Tyler Pitlick of Centerville (18) and Warroad's Brock Nelson (25).

TSN's Bob Mckenzie ranks Russian center Alexander Burmistrov of the Barrie Colts as the ninth best player available, and he put Forbort at 10th. Burmistrov ranked 11th in the Central Scouting rankings.

Central Scouting compares Forbort with St. Louis Blues defenseman Erik Johnson, and Burmistrov with Atlanta's Maxim Afinogenov.

Other players ranked near the ninth pick by Central Scouting include (NHL player comparison in parentheses):

#7 D Mary Pysyk (Duncan Keith)
#8 RW Emerson Etem (Glenn Anderson)
#10 C Ryan Johansen (Jason Spezza)
#12 RW Nino Niederreiter (Erik Cole)

The top-ranked European skaters include: C Mikael Granlund of HIFK in Finland, RW Vladimir Tarasenko of Novosibirsk in Russia, RW Evgeny Kuznetsov of Chelyabinsk in Russia, C Calle Jarnkrok and LW Ludvig Rensveldt of Byrnas Jr. in Sweden.
