The Minnesota Wild has a heavyweight again, at least for the time being. After the team reassigned left wing Colton Gillies to the Houston Aeros and placed Guillaume Latendresse on injured reserve with a lower body injury, the Wild recalled rugged winger Matt Kassian on Wednesday.
Kassian appeared to have made the club out of training camp, and was with the team in Helsinki, Finland. However, he was notified along with Drew Bagnall just a couple days before the opener, that he would not be on the final roster. Now, he could get his chance to make his NHL debut on Friday against the Calgary Flames. Assuming Antti Miettinen and Pierre-Marc Bouchard are not able to return because of concussions, Kassian will be in.
The bruising enforcer had an impressive training camp, and has continued to play well in Houston. He has played in nine of the 10 Aeros games this season, notching one assist and racking up 28 penalty minutes.
When asked earlier today about demoting Gillies, Richards stressed that the move was not done because of poor performance, but because he wants young players to get more ice time, rather than playing limited minutes on the fourth line.
