Fantasy Pick: Niklas Backstrom
I think Sporting News Today may have said it best on Thursday: "Niklas Backstrom (5-3-2, 1.88, .938) has quietly strung together one of the best starts in the league."
Certainly, Wild fans have heard a little more about Backstrom's stellar play than the average NHL fan around the country, but still, it's sort of amazing his stats haven't made a bigger splash among NHL news to start the hockey season.
The stats above are correct. Nik has earned five wins with an awesome 1.88 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage to start the year.
He enters tonight's game against Calgary on the heels of a 36-save shutout against San Jose, the 20th of his career. If his hot play of late wasn't enough to forecast a great game for Backstrom, his solid career numbers against the Flames help the cause.
Backs is 8-7-4 with a 2.04 GAA, a .921 SV% and three shutouts in 22 starts against Calgary in his career. Even more impressive are his numbers against the Flames as of late: he is 4-1-0 in his last six starts, with a 1.22 GAA, a .955 SV% and two shutouts.
