Spurgeon Recalled; Kobasew Returns
In July, defenseman Jared Spurgeon was invited as a tryout player to the team's Development Camp. He impressed enough there to earn another invitation to the team's Prospect Tournament in Traverse City, where he helped the Wild youngsters came away with an undefeated record and a championship. That earned him yet another invitation to the Wild's training camp, and that's when he signed a free agent contract with the club.

Tonight, Spurgeon was recalled by the Minnesota Wild and will join the team in Calgary, where he could make his NHL debut on Monday.

At 5-foot-9, 175 pounds, Spurgeon isn't a prototypical NHL defenseman. In fact, he will be the smallest player on the Wild roster. But Spurgeon has brought offense from the blue line wherever he's been, including 51 points (8-43=51) in 54 games last season with Spokane, who he won a Memorial Cup with in 2008. HIs offensive contributions have continued this season in Houston, where he's recorded two goals and seven assists in 21 games. He's recorded eight of those points in the last eight games, and last night, he scored Houston's only regulation goal and the deciding shootout goal in a win over the Milwaukee Admirals.

Spurgeon won't be the only player joining the team in Calgary. Chuck Kobasew, who is nearing a return to the lineup after a lower body injury sidelined him for 11 games. Kobasew left the team earlier this week to travel to his hometown of Vancouver and deal with a family matter.
