Wild Signs RW Jed Ortmeyer

There's still no word if we'll hear "The Victors" playing throughout Xcel Energy Center should a Minnesota Wild line include John Madden, Eric Nystrom and the newest member of the Wild organization. There is official word that former Wolverine Jed Ortmeyer has signed a contract with the club and has cleared waivers. For now, he will remain with the Houston Aeros where he signed a pro tryout contract last week.

The 32-year-old right wing is a veteran of 306 NHL games in stints with the New York Rangers, Nashville, and San Jose. His best season came a year ago with the President Trophy-winning San Jose Sharks. In 76 games, he contributed eight goals and 11 assists.

Now, he'll have the chance to provide veteran leadership to the Wild should a callup to Houston be necessary. He's hoping he can make his way back to the NHL and play alongside guys like Nystrom, who was a linemate for two years at Michigan.

"Hopefully I can play well enough [in Houston] and get back to playing in the NHL," said Ortmeyer on Wednesday. "My game is pretty simple: working hard, good on the penalty kill and being an energy guy. Hopefully I can chip in some points and be a good role model for some of these younger guys down here [in Houston]."

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Omaha, Nebraska native has had a whirlwind experience already as an Aero. After being released by the San Antonio Rampage, he signed a tryout contract with the Aeros, drove down to Houston from Nebraska and was playing unexpectedly the next night against the team that had just released him. Ortmeyer recorded an assist in the game.

"It was an interesting night playing against all those guys I had just played with and getting in the lineup so quickly."
