Wild Reassigns Spurgeon to Houston

The Minnesota Wild reassigned defenseman Jared Spurgeon to the Houston Aeros of the AHL today. Since most recently being recalled from the Aeros on Dec. 30, the 21-year-old played three games before being a healthy scratch for Wild's most recent three games. Spurgeon last played 15:36 TOI in the Wild's win in New Jersey on Jan. 4.

Spurgeon has been one of the Wild's top defensive prospects this season, originally being recalled on Nov. 28. He has totaled 15 games with the Wild this season, averaging 12:37 TOI while accruing two penalty minutes and a -3 rating. He made his NHL debut on his 21st birthday, Nov. 29 in Calgary.

Spurgeon has nine points (2-7=9) and 10 PIM in 22 games with the Aeros this season. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound native of Edmonton, Alberta, tallied 51 points (8-43=51) in 54 games for Spokane of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season. He won a Memorial Cup with Spokane in 2008. Spurgeon was the New York Islanders’ sixth-round pick (No. 156 overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed by the Wild as a free agent on Sept. 22.
