Fantasy Pick: Niklas Backstrom
With the way some of the Wild players have been lighting the lamp recently, we must admit the fantasy spotlight has probably looked like a list of skilled forwards lately. But it's important to remember that that goalies need love too - and that they can earn you a boatload of points for your fantasy hockey team.
The Wild knows all about goalies helping the team earn boatloads of points. Case in point: Niklas Backstrom. Yes, the Wild's played well lately, but you could argue that the team has just started to perform as well as Backs' calm and confident play. If you've watched games over the past month, you can tell he's stepped up to a whole different level; he always seems to be in position, rarely gives rebounds and every nearly every night makes a highlight real robbery of a goal.
Since missing four games with a hip flexor strain in January, he has been one of the top goalies in the NHL. Backs is 4-2-0 with a 1.49 GAA, a .956 SV% and two shutouts over his last six starts. He's allowed just three goals in the month of February.
It's a second half of the season as usual for Backstrom. From October –January he owns an 85-57-14 career mark with a 2.46 GAA and a .917 SV%. In the season’s final three months he has posted a 51-23-19 record on the strength of a 2.21 GAA and a .923 SV%.
