The Wild thought even higher of him, taking him 39th overall as the first of three second round picks owned by the club. The club's excitement over the rugged forward hasn't wavered over the past season, and the club signed him on Thursday to a three-year entry level contract. He'll now join the Houston Aeros who have advanced to the second round of the Calder Cup playoffs after a four-game sweep of the Peoria Rivermen.
"We are very happy to have Brett under contract," said Assistant General Manager Brent Flahr. "He is a quality young prospect with a valuable combination of size, speed, skill, and grit. Brett will now join the Aeros in their push for a Calder Cup and we look forward to assisting him in any way we can to reach his NHL potential."
Bulmer finished this past season with 49 points (18-31=49) in 57 games with Kelowna of the Western Hockey League. He added four goals and two assists in 10 playoff games with the Rockets. He'll have one more year of junior eligibility left and could return to Kelowna next season if he's not playing for the Wild.
Aside from offense, the Wild has been impressed with his size and tenacity. Soft-spoken off the ice, Bulmer has a mean streak, as evidenced by 109 penalty minutes this year, and his willingness to antagonize players at the Wild's Development Camp last summer. Type his name into a YouTube search and you'll find plenty of willingness to drop the gloves.
"It was a pretty good season for me," said Bulmer who missed 14 games late in the season with a leg injury. "I would have liked to get a few more points. But overall, I thought I worked hard in that area and it was a good sign [to achieve career highs] and I'm pretty happy about it."
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, the Wild is also salivating at having a player that has the height, and is sure to grow into his frame.
"Hopefully I can gain about 10 pounds this summer," said Bulmer. "I've got the height and size, I've just got to put on more weight. It'll come but I'll be working hard to do it."
