C Jonathan Toews tallied a goal and an assist and scored the shootout winner, and G Ray Emery made 27 saves plus two in the shootout, as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-3 in front of 19,254 – the sixth largest regular season crowd ever at Xcel Energy Center.
C Mikko Koivu, C Kyle Brodziak and C Matt Cullen scored a goal apiece, RW Cal Clutterbuck posted two assists and G Niklas Backstrom made 27 saves for Minnesota, which rallied from two goals down to force overtime and still leads the NHL with 44 points. The Wild leads the Blackhawks by two points. Minnesota plays host to the New York Islanders on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
C Mikko Koivu scored his eighth goal of the season – fourth in his last five games – to force overtime with 5:04 left in regulation. Koivu has points in 13 of his last 14 games (7-11=18) and leads the team with 28 points (8-20=28).
RW Cal Clutterbuck posted his second career two-assist game. The other came Dec. 28, 2009, at Los Angeles.
C Kyle Brodziak scored his team-best 11th goal of the season, getting the Wild within 2-1 at the 13:10 mark of the second period. He also won 16-of-23 faceoffs.
C Matt Cullen netted his ninth goal of the season to tie the game 2-2 with 4:19 left in the second.
Minnesota has allowed two goals or fewer in 21 of 32 games. The team is 19-2-0 when allowing two goals or fewer and 1-6-4 when yielding three or more.
The Wild is 2-0-2 in the second half of back-to-backs this season.
Minnesota is a league-leading 12-6-1 when allowing the first goal. Chicago is 11-0-1 when scoring first.
The Wild is 4-2 in shootouts. Chicago is 4-3.
Minnesota is 11-3-4 in one-goal games, having gone 9-1-1 in the last 11. Chicago is 10-2-4 in one-goal games.
Minnesota played without RW Pierre-Marc Bouchard, who suffered facial injuries in Winnipeg on Tuesday.
