Granlund, Finland Fall Short Of Medal

Finland's Mikael Granlund will not have another medal to hang next to the gold one he earned at the 2011 World Championships. Finland was shut out in Thursday's bronze medal game to an angry Canadian team that settled for bronze after losing to Russia on Tuesday.

Granlund ends the tournament as Finland's leading scorer with two goals and nine assists for 11 points. It was a disappointing finish for one of Finland's biggest hockey stars, who had a chance to extend a shootout in the semifinal against Sweden, but had the puck roll off his stick.

"Of course it's a big disappointment," he admitted after the 4-0 loss to Canada. "We were so close in the semifinal, but we didn't do that. We tried to do everything we could for the bronze medal, but the right team won this game."

Granlund said he got a call after the semifinal from his World Championship teammate and future Wild teammate, Mikko Koivu. He said Koivu reminded him that "it's just hockey" and "sometimes something like that happens."

"He's a great player, and a good friend," said Granlund of Koivu.

Granlund now heads back to Finland where he'll attempt to help HIFK repeat as SM-Liiga champions. When asked if he still plans on signing with Minnesota, he didn't hesitate.

"Of course I want to play some day for the Wild."
