Post-Game Notes vs. Boston - Feb. 19
G Niklas Backstrom made 22 of his career-high 48 saves in the third period for his 26th career shutout and C Chad Rau, recalled earlier in the day, scored his second career goal midway through the second period, as the Minnesota Wild capped off NBC’s Hockey Day in America with a 2-0 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in front of 19,198 fans at Xcel Energy Center. C Matt Cullen added a goal for Minnesota, which moved just four points behind eighth-place Calgary and starts a two-game road trip in Florida on Thursday.
G Niklas Backstrom made 48 saves – a career-high and the most ever by a Wild goalie in a shutout. Backstrom’s previous career high in saves was 47, and the most ever by a Wild goalie in a shutout was 41. Backstrom had been 0-3-2 in his last five starts.
C Chad Rau, a native of Eden Prairie, scored his second career goal. His first came in his NHL debut Hockey Day Minnesota on Jan. 21. Rau was recalled from Houston this morning, having flown from Vancouver to Los Angeles and Minneapolis since Sunday evening.
C Matt Cullen, born in Virginia, Minn., and a high school hockey standout in Moorhead, scored his first goal in 16 games since Jan. 10. It was his 12th goal, tying his total from 2010-11.
LW Dany Heatley posted an assist, giving him a team-best 42 points (19-23=42).
RW Cal Clutterbuck recorded his eighth assist this season – first since Jan. 10.
Minnesota went 1-for-1 with the man advantage. The Wild power play is now 6-for-16 (37.5%) in the last seven home games.
The Wild is 10-1-1 all-time versus the Bruins, outscoring them 35-15. Boston is 0-for-36 all-time against Minnesota on the power play including 0-for-1 tonight.
Boston was shut out for the fourth time in nine games.
The Wild, FOX Sports North and Minnesota Hockey presented the Third Annual State of Hockey Lifetime Achievement Award to Glen Sonmor during the second intermission.
