C Mikko Koivu scored 15 seconds into overtime after C Erik Christensen forced the extra session with 31 seconds left in regulation, as the Minnesota Wild rallied for a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers at Xcel Energy Center. C Kyle Brodziak scored early in the third period and G Niklas Backstrom made 25 saves for the Wild, which plays host to Los Angeles on Saturday. Florida got 22 saves from former Wild G Jose Theodore.
C Mikko Koivu netted his second career overtime winning goal, the other coming March 5, 2009, against San Jose. Koivu has two goals in as many games and 12 tallies on the season.
C Erik Christensen scored his fifth goal in nine games to force overtime with nine seconds left.
The Wild is 9-2-2 all time against Florida and has outscored the Panthers 40-22 in those games. Minnesota has never lost to Florida in regulation at Xcel Energy Center, having gone 4-0-2.
C Kyle Brodziak moved into a tie for the team lead with his career-best 21st goal of the season. It extended his home point streak to five games (4-4=8). The Wild is 10-5-4 this season when Brodziak scores a goal.
RW Cal Clutterbuck recorded an assist for the second straight game, giving him 26 points (14-12=26) in 69 games this season. It marked Clutterbuck’s 99th career NHL point (57-42=99) in 299 games, all with Minnesota.
G Niklas Backstrom made his first start since getting injured March 1 at Montreal. He made 25 saves for his first win since Feb. 26 against San Jose.
RW Scottie Upshall scored the Panthers’ first goal. He has eight goals and 14 points in 16 career games versus Minnesota. Only four active players have a higher goals/game mark versus Minnesota, led by Corey Perry (.58).
Wild LW Jason Zucker made his NHL debut, becoming the team-record 45th player for Minnesota this season, and 14th rookie. He’s the eighth player to make his NHL debut for the Wild this season. He skated 12 shifts and had three shots and two hits.
Florida is 25-2-10 when scoring first – its two regulation losses are fewest in NHL in that situation.
