Aeros Earn Three Points

In three games over the weekend, the Houston Aeros, the Minnesota Wild’s American Hockey League affiliate, earned three points. Two games went to shootouts, while the first game, on the road against the Oklahoma City Barons, was decided by one goal.

In Friday’s road contest, the Aeros were edged by the Barons, 4-3. After falling behind by three goals, Houston pushed for third-period comeback, but finished just short. Aeros forwards Mikael Granlund, Charlie Coyle and Johan Larsson each scored in the third period to tie the game 3-3, as Houston outshot Oklahoma City 17-5 in the final frame. However, Jordan Eberle netted the game winner with 6:16 remaining in the third period. In the loss, netminder Darcy Kuemper (3-1-0) made 14 saves. For the recap, click here.

In the second road game against the Barons, the Aeros got revenge on Saturday night, winning a shootout, 4-3.

Again the Aeros would have to erase a three-goal deficit, but this time with better results. During a 2:48 span in the third period, the Aeros scored three unanswered goals to tie the game and send it into overtime. Forwards David McIntyre and Joel Broda, as well as defenseman Chay Genoway sparked the rally in the final frame with a goal each. Center Zack Phillips was instrumental in leading the comeback, setting up the last two goals in regulation. Phillips and Justin Fontaine each added a goal in the shootout. Aeros goalie Matt Hackett (2-3-0) stopped 24 shots in regulation and stopped all four attempts in the shootout to preserve the shootout win. The full-game recap, go here.

In the final game of the three-in-three, the Aeros hosted the Grand Rapids Griffins. Houston earned a point, dropping a 2-1 shootout.

Houston center Chad Rau scored the team’s lone goal in regulation, helping the Aeros pick up a point for the seventh time in the last eight games (5-1-1-1). Houston goalie Matt Hackett (2-3-1) suffered the shootout loss after making 31 saves on 32 shots in regulation and overtime. The game recap can be found, here.

The Aeros continue its four-game home stand on Thursday, Nov. 8 with a 7:05 p.m. faceoff versus the Toronto Marlies.
