Dumba Leads On And Off Ice

The kid with a smile as wider than the mouth of the Mississippi River has a bit of upper-lip garnish to go along with his pearly whites this Movember. Wild prospect Matt Dumba is captaining the Red Deer Rebels’ Movember efforts and growing his Mo to help change the face of men’s health.

It’s no surprise that the defenseman would lead the team’s effort, as his leadership qualities on and off ice have been well documented. Last season Dumba acted as captain for Canada's Under-18 team at the World Championship and captained Canada to a gold medal at the 2011 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka Tournament.

Seven other Rebels have joined Dumba in the fundraising and facial hair efforts, which have become a November institution around hockey rinks. State of Hockey fans are familiar with Movember, as the Wild has annually participated in the initiative, this year captained by Head Coach Mike Yeo and presented by Sun Country Airlines.

The 18-year-old has a pretty good ‘stache going, and you can donate and check in on his progress at his Mo Space page. With their Mo's, Mo Bros and raise vital awareness and funds for men's health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives.

The Wild's first-round pick (seventh overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft will take his cookie duster into the Subway Super Series, representing the Western Hockey League all-stars against Team Russia tonight in Vancouver, B.C. He will also skate for Team WHL on Thursday, Nov. 15 in Victoria, B.C. Playing in both games, he was named an alternate captain for Team WHL for the series. The both games will broadcast on the NHL Network at 9 p.m. CST.

“It was my second year being selected and it’s such a privilege,” Dumba said to Jesse Michael on the Canadian Hockey League's website.

The blueliner will use his experience from last season, and try to build on it. His goal for the series is to leave a good impression heading into the selection process for this year’s World Junior Championships in Ufa, Russia. Last season as a 17-year-old, he was left off of Team Canada’s roster.

“I really just want to show that I deserve to be at the World Junior selection camp,” Dumba told Michael. “(The Subway Super Series) is the final step towards that and I’m looking forward to it.”
