Backstrom Named NHL No. 3 Star
Two fluke goals couldn't rattle Niklas Backstrom last week, as the Minnesota Wild netmnider has been named the NHL's Number Three Star of the Week ending March 3.
During the week Backstrom went undefeated, stringing together three straight wins, a 2.00 goals against average and .914 save percentage. He started things off with 21 save overtime thriller in a win against Calgary on Tuesday. In Phoenix on Thursday, the goaltender made 25 saves for the victory over the Coyotes. One of the three goals allowed was a fluky bounce off the glass that caromed in behind the netminder. Backstrom closed the week out yesterday with a, 4-2 win, 21 save night against the Edmonton Oilers.
Backstrom is the first Wild player to be honored with an NHL Star of the Week this season. This marks the fourth time he has been named an NHL Star of the Week.
On the year, Backstrom is 9-5-2 with a .917 save percentage and 2.21 goals against average. He is also nominated for the Ri-DQ-ulous Plays of the Week for a breakaway save against the Flames.
The NHL's First Star was Max Pacioretty from the Montreal Canadiens, who had four goals and three assists last week. Patrice Bergeron was named the League's Second Star with two goals and five assists.
