Wild Re-Signs Spurgeon

The Wild has locked up an integral part of its blue line, re-signing defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a three-year contract.

Spurgeon, 23 (11/29/89), tallied 15 points (5-10=15) including four power-play goals in 39 games with Minnesota in 2012-13. He established career-bests in goals, power-play goals, game-winning goals (two), plus-minus rating (plus-1) and set a team record for a defenseman (along with Clayton Stoner) with a plus-5 rating at Dallas on March 25. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound native of Edmonton, Alb., ranked third on the team in TOI/game at 21:32. He skated in all five playoff games with Minnesota and ranked fourth on the team in TOI/game at 21:15.

Spurgeon has collected 50 points (12-38=50) and 12 penalty minutes (PIM) in 162 career NHL games with Minnesota. His penalty minute total is the lowest amongst NHL players that have played in at least 100 games over the last three seasons. He was originally signed by Minnesota as a free agent on Sept. 23, 2010. Spurgeon was drafted by the New York Islanders in the sixth-round (No. 156 overall) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
