Wild Signs Pominville To Extension
The Minnesota Wild has signed forward Jason Pominville to a five-year contract extension.

Heading into his first full season with the Minnesota Wild, Jason Pominville is just starting to feel comfortable in the State of Hockey.

Well, he's going to start feeling at home in Minnesota because the Wild and has inked Pominville to a five-year contract extension.

“It’s exciting that he wanted to commit to us,” Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher said. “To me it sends a strong message that he believes in the direction we are going and we’re thrilled to have him."

“It was something we wanted done before the season so it wouldn't be a distraction,” Pominville said. “I'm really excited to be a part of this team for the next six years.”

Head Coach Mike Yeo weighed in on the extension, noting it's a huge thing for the Wild.

"This guy is such a valuable player for us, he's such a valuable teammate," Yeo said. "He has so much respect from his teammates. It's a great job by our organization to get him signed and it's great of him to show that commitment to our organization."

The winger ranks tied for 19th in the NHL in assists (with Mikko Koivu) and 26th in scoring since the start of the 2007-08 season. He also ranks tied for ninth in the NHL with 530 games played since the start of the 2006-07 campaign. The 2012 NHL All-Star has recorded 465 points (189-276=465), including 43 power-play goals, 21 game-winning tallies, a plus-41 rating and 147 penalty minutes (PIM) in 588 regular season contests during nine seasons with Buffalo and Minnesota. The 2008 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy Finalist has added 28 points (12-16=28) in 47 career NHL playoff games. He also recorded five points (2-3=5) in seven games for Team USA, skating alongside Wild teammate Zach Parise at the 2008 IIHF World Championship.

The 6-foot, 185-pound native of Repentigny, Que., collected 73 points (30-43=73) in 82 games in 2011-12 and added four points (1-3=4) in five playoff contests after being named the Sabres 16th full-time captain on Oct. 6, 2011.

The 30-year-old was acquired by Minnesota on Trade Deadline Day from Buffalo last season. He tallied nine points (4-5=9) in 10 games after coming to Minnesota.

Pominville will skate on a line with Koivu and Zach Parise as the Wild opens its regular season against the Los Angeles Kings tonight at 7 p.m. at Xcel Energy Center.
