Parise Named NHL\'s First Star
With eight points through three games last week, the left-winger was named the First Star of the Week

Zach Parise
has been named the National Hockey League’s First Star of the Week (Jan. 27 - Feb. 2).

The left-winger led all NHL players with eight points (3-5=8) in three games for the Minnesota Wild (1-1-1) last week. He recorded three points (1-2=3), including the game-winning goal, in the Wild’s 4-2 win at Anaheim Tuesday. Parise notched a season-high four points (2-2=4) and nine shots in a 5-4 loss at Colorado Thursday. He also picked up an assist and a team-high four hits in the Wild’s 4-3 overtime loss at Calgary Saturday.

Parise was officially named Captain of the 2014 U.S. Olympic Men’s Hockey Team Friday, but was notified of the honor just before he started his productive week – prior the game in Anaheim Tuesday.

With 35 points (18-17=35) through 42 games played this season, the 29-year-old is tied for second on the Wild, trailing Jason Pominville’s 38 points. Parise is also second on the team in goals (18).

He becomes the fifth Wild player to be named the First Star of the Week — and second this season — following Jason Pominville (11/4/13), Josh Harding (11/7/11), Marian Gaborik (1/13/08, 12/23/07) and Niklas Backstrom (12/19/06).

Toronto's Phil Kessel earned this week's second star with seven points (3-4=7), while Calgary's Mikael Backlund earned the third star with a six point effort (4-2=6).
