Wild.com has selected G Niklas Backstrom as the Minnesalsa Player of the Week for October 16 through 22. Backstrom started two games last week at Vancouver and at home against Colorado. Backstrom posted a 1-1 record in those two games and did not allow more than two goals in either contest. In the October 17 game against the Canucks, Backstrom was the hard luck loser in a 2-1 decision despite stopping 37 of 39 Canuck shots. On October 21, the Wild netminder turned aside 33 of 35 Colorado shots through regulation and overtime. He then stopped all the of the Avalanche shootout attempts to earn his second win of the season.

Backstrom’s earning of the coveted pepper puts him in a tie for first place with Andrew Brunette, who took the honor in the season’s first week.

For the remainder of the season, a Wild.com panel will be selecting the Minnesalsa Player of the Week. The player selected as the player of the week will win the Minnesalsa pepper for the week. We will keep track of the standings right here on Wild.com.

Niklas Backstrom October 5 - 12, 2009

Andrew Brunette October 5 - 12, 2009
