Minnesota Wild (8-7-2: 18 points, T-11th in Western Conference, T-2nd in Northwest Division) vs. Calgary Flames (7-7-3: 17 points, 13th in Western Conference, 4th in Northwest Division)

If revenge truly is a dish best served cold, the Minnesota Wild looks to ice the Calgary Flames tonight after suffering a 3-1 loss in Alberta on Saturday. Tonight, Minnesota shoots to derail the Flames, currently on a two-game win streak. Coincidentally in their last meeting, Calgary disrupted a two-game Wild win streak. This marks the third time these two teams have met this season and their first meeting at Xcel Energy Center. The Wild is 17-11-7 all-time at home against Calgary.

Today, the team placed forward Cal Clutterbuck on Injured Reserve. Clutterbuck suffered a lower body injury on Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers after taking a low hit from Taylor Hall. The Oilers’ forward was suspended two games for the incident.

With Clutterbuck out of the lineup, the Wild recalled Charlie Coyle last week. Yesterday, Coyle was on the wing with Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise. Moving the rookie forward to the top line isn’t the only shift for tonight’s contest, as another rookie is expected to be reinserted into Minnesota lineup. Mikael Granlund, who turns 21 today, looks to reenter the lineup after being a healthy scratch in the club’s last outing. He’ll center the fourth line with Mike Rupp and Torrey Mitchell.

In order to try squeezing more juice out of the man advantage, the Wild changed up its power play personnel at yesterday’s practice. Granlund moved to the top unit with Parise and Koivu, while Dany Heatley skated with Matt Cullen and Devin Setoguchi. Look for the team to improve on its 13.8 percent power play efficiency.

The Wild’s loss to the Flames on Saturday snapped a two-game win streak. Coyle scored the team’s lone goal. The winger redirected a Pierre-Marc Bouchard centering pass for the first of his NHL career. Kyle Brodziak picked up the second assist on the play.

In its last outing, the Flames had a big offensive outburst in a 5-4 win against the Phoenix Coyotes. Jarome Iginla broke out of an early season slump by scoring twice. Tim Jackman and Mike Cammalleri added goals, while Curtis Glencross tallied the game winner with just a minute left in regulation. Goalie Joey MacDonald made 23 saves for the victory.

After Flames Head Coach Bob Hartley challenged his team for not being tough enough last week, the team has picked up its play. Calgary has climbed within one point of the Wild in the standings, as only three points separate seven teams for the eight spot in the Western Conference.

Journeyman goaltender Joey MacDonald has helped keep the Flames in game. In five games since the injury to Calgary stalwart, Mikka Kiprusoff, MacDonald has goine 3-2-0 with a 2.85 goals against average and .901 save percentage.

The Wild will recognize two high school hockey standouts. This year’s Ms. Hockey Award winner Dani Cameranesi, a senior forward on the Blake School girls’ hockey team, and the Let’s Play Hockey Senior Goalie of the Year Sydney Rossman of Minnetonka High School, will be in attendance at tonight’s game.

The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Mikko Koivu Player Card Magnet, the first in a set of four. Put Mikko on your fridge.

The Wild will wear its RED home sweaters.

Ryan Suter has tallied five assists in the last seven games and is tied for first on the team with nine assists this year. He also ranks first in the NHL in time on ice per game at 27:34. That’s longer than a sitcom every time out.

Clutterbuck is on Injured Reserve, as is Josh Harding as he deals with multiple sclerosis.

RW Tim Jackman played at Park Center High School and spent two seasons at Minnesota State University, Mankato (2000-02).

The Wild has been shorthanded just 53 times this season–the fewest in the NHL. Minnesota’s penalty kill ranks sixth in the NHL at 84.9%, and the Wild is 7-2-1 when not allowing a PPG.
