Red Wings top Wild in shootout after blowing big lead

Paul Harris  - NHL.com Correspondent | Tuesday, 01.20.2015 / 11:35 PM

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings won the game, but they didn't like the way it happened.

Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist scored in the shootout to give the Red Wings a 5-4 win against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena.

Detroit (27-11-9) blew a 4-1 lead in the third period.

"It's obviously not the way we wanted to win the game. We found a way in the end. It was nice to get the two points," Nyquist said. "Up 4-1, going into the third, let them tie it up. We didn't do a good enough job of playing above them; I think they got on the inside."

Nyquist had a goal and an assist, Teemu Pulkkinen scored his first career goal, and Jonathan Ericsson and Xavier Ouellet each scored for the Red Wings, who won their fifth straight.

Henrik Zetterberg had three assists to give him seven points in his past two games, and Petr Mrazek made 34 saves to earn the win.

Detroit improved its shootout record to 2-7.

"We've had some troubles with [shootouts]. I don't know our stats really, but they're not good," Nyquist said. "Every win you get in a shootout is a nice bonus point there."

Zach Parise and Thomas Vanek led Minnesota's rally from the three-goal deficit in the third period. Parise scored twice, and Vanek had a goal and an assist to key the comeback.

"We had a chance to win the game. We were in a pretty big hole against a real good team," Parise said. "We came back to have a chance to win."

Mikko Koivu had a goal and Ryan Suter two assists for the Wild (20-20-6), who have lost two in a row and four of six (2-3-1).

Devan Dubnyk allowed four goals on 10 shots before being pulled in favor of Darcy Kuemper almost halfway through the game. Kuemper made 14 saves.

Parise's second goal of the game, 19th of the season, tied it 4-4 with 6:39 left in regulation. He intercepted Ericsson's ill-advised pass from behind the Detroit net and jammed his third attempt past Mrazek.

"I was lucky. The guy shot the puck right into my shaft, and it just lay there," said Parise, who has five goals in his past four games. "I just tried to backhand it. I really don't know exactly how it went in."

Vanek's ninth goal made it 4-3 with 9:59 left.

Pulkkinen opened the scoring 9:09 into the game when he ripped a one-time slap shot from the high slot off a backhand pass from Stephen Weiss off the rush.

Pulkkinen took his first career penalty a little more than four minutes later, and Minnesota immediately capitalized.

Koivu beat Mrazek with a wrist shot from the right circle with 6:38 left in the first period, seven seconds into the penalty, to tie the game 1-1. It was Koivu's seventh goal.

The Red Wings regained the lead on Ericsson's goal with 5:30 remaining in the opening period. His one-time slap shot from the left point found the short side past Dubnyk's blocker. It was Ericsson's second goal.

Nyquist's power-play goal 3:41 into the second period made it 3-1. He tipped Nilkas Kronwall's shot from the point out of the air and past Dubnyk.

It was Nyquist's 19th goal, 11th on the power play. It was also his third goal in three games.

Ouellet scored his second goal of the season at 7:25. His one-time shot from the high slot deflected up and in off the top of Minnesota forward Justin Fontaine's skate.

Wild coach Mike Yeo then replaced Dubnyk with Kuemper, who had missed the past six games because of a lower-body injury.

Detroit had 13 shots in the first two periods.

"The mood was fine. No one was hanging their heads. We said, 'Keep going,'" Vanek said. "We were happy with the way we were playing the first two periods. We gave up 12 shots. They just got a couple of bounces."

Parise pulled Minnesota to within 4-2 with a power-play goal 6:01 into the third period. He put a loose puck into the open side of the net from the bottom of the left circle. It came with Ericsson in the penalty box for high sticking.

"When Minnesota is down three goals, they have to come somehow back and I think they pushed hard," Mrazek said. "I think we played good in the third, but they pushed hard and had some rebounds. They made some good offense and they scored three goals."

It was each team's last game before the All-Star break, which ends Jan. 26.
