ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Marco Sturm is making the most of his move to the Boston Bruins.
Sturm scored his fourth goal in six games since coming to Boston, helping the Bruins to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night.
Sturm, traded from San Jose on Nov. 30 as part of the Joe Thornton deal, scored the game-winner on what he described as a "garbage goal." David Tanabe's shot midway through the third period glanced off Sturm's right thigh and into the net, giving the Bruins their first win over the Wild.
"I feel good," Sturm said. "We struggled big time in San Jose, so that was not fun. (The trade) worked out good."
Minnesota is 2-5-2 in its last nine games and has failed to score more than two goals in any of the losses.
"We got a lot of chances, just couldn't capitalize," Minnesota's Alexandre Daigle said. "That's the story of the last nine, 10 games. It seems every bad break, we get them."
Former Bruins forward Brian Rolston had a goal and an assist in his first game against his former team.
Minnesota's recently effective power play got the Wild on the board 11 seconds after the game's first penalty was whistled.
Marc Chouinard left a no-look pass for Rolston in the high slot, and Rolston's long wrist shot beat Andrew Raycroft low on the glove side.
Boston tied the game 90 seconds later by taking advantage of a fortuitous bounce off the end boards. Brian Leetch dumped the puck into the Minnesota zone where it traveled around the boards before hitting a seam behind the Wild net and bouncing to the front of the crease.
Minnesota goalie Manny Fernandez, who'd gone behind the net to play the puck, scrambled back but couldn't get set in time to stop Patrice Bergeron's shot.
"We got the most garbage goals," Sturm said. "Against the Wild, you always score kind of garbage goals. It happened again today."
Sergei Samsonov gave the Bruins their first lead in the second period when he tipped Tom Fitzgerald's shot past Fernandez. A frustrated Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire erupted about the goal after the game, claiming that Samsonov had punched it in with his hand.
"The (replay) crew upstairs has got to be the worst in the NHL," Lemaire said. "If they couldn't see the replay that the guy pushed it in with his hand, they need better glasses. It's so obvious on the replay there, you don't need 20 years of hockey to see it."
Replay supervisor Dave Newell defended the call, saying it was not conclusive that Samsonov meant to punch the puck.
"We took probably longer than we should have, but the end result was there was no intent seen on Samsonov to deliberately direct the puck into the net," Newell told a pool reporter after the game.
Raycroft, who finished with 29 saves, stopped Rolston on a short-handed breakaway later in the second, but the Wild tied the game 2-2 on another power play when Randy Robitaille tapped in the rebound of Kurtis Foster's shot.
Fernandez finished with 25 saves.
Notes: Wild wing Kyle Wanvig was a healthy scratch for the third consecutive game. He has not played since serving a one-game suspension for instigating a fight with Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik late in the team's 5-0 win at Pittsburgh on Dec. 8. ... The Bruins' last win in the state of Minnesota was a 3-2 victory over the North Stars on Feb. 24, 1990. The game was played at the Met Center in Bloomington. ... Minnesota's power play has now scored at least one goal in 14 of its last 15 games.
